Paper Planes Paper planes reconfigures and develops earlier collaborations (Space Antics 2011, Swerve 2012) in which Henderson, Marsden and Mason worked with playful and disquieting orientations of drawings prints and objects to create an immersive experience of distorted space and indeterminate scale. A significant component of Swerve was a series of undulating planes which recalled rooflines and home renovation displays. The gallery space at Sawtooth offers the artists opportunity to further develop these ideas. Works on paper incorporating drawings, prints and paintings explore how surfaces can modify the meaning and physical experience of an interior space. The project expands our traditional understanding of works on paper. In Space Antics and Swerve the drawings occupy an ambiguous position as both a sort of reversible wallpaper - yet at the same time declaring preciousness in their hand painted execution. Paper planes explores the impact of planar orientations which operate in between 2d and 3d configurations. This research contributes to understanding of the boundaries that delineate decorative and fine arts; the technical limitations and possibilities of non-standard hanging methods (for paper based works); and the impact of formal and informal spaces on the reception of a particular work.
