Despite an increasing amount of social science research online about youth engagement with social media, opportunities, challenges and issues in utilising social media in participant recruitment for youth educational studies have not received sufficient attention. The purpose of this chapter is to provide some future directions for facilitating the social media platform YouTube as important supplements or alternatives to traditional participant recruitment procedures. This chapter initially discusses challenges and issues in recruiting teen online users and then highlights the importance of a pilot study in recruiting them for social media research. The data collected in the course of running four pilot trials with a group of teenagers, their parents and researchers, have significantly contributed to improvements in the adaptability and robustness of participant recruitment mechanisms. The insights afforded through analysis of the data informed the production of a suitable recruitment video. It is hoped this chapter may contribute to emerging innovative methodological approaches that utilise multimedia tools to facilitate participant recruitment.
