From a palaeontologist’s point of view, evolution is typically considered in the context of deep time, using fossils and other traces of ancient life to interpret diversification and taxonomy. Shapiro takes a quite different approach. Exploring evolution from the microbiologists/geneticists perspective he describes how recently discovered intra- and inter-cellular processes can be employed to investigate how organisms actively change themselves.
