The dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum is the only gymnodinoid saxitoxin-producing dinoflagellate and, as such, is phylogenetically distant from all other saxitoxin producers that belong exclusively to the related gonyaulacoid genera Alexandrium and Pyrodinium.
