This commissioned worked seeks to exploit and examine the complexities and nuance in creating an original work for a traditional classical orchestra, an African American gospel choir and a soul-based rhythm/horn section. The transculturalisation of African American gospel music lies at the heart of Legg's research, and this commission is the first original work to attempt to bring the nuance and gesture of African American gospel music - transformed within the contect of the Southern Gospel Choir and the Australian diaspora - into a traditional western-calssical context. The central issues in creating this work are a logical continuation and application of Legg's traditional published works, book chapters and PhD. This commission/composition created a new context for Legg's original music and for the application and demonstration of the techniques and concepts he articulates in his research.
