Images of ageing by older people: An exhibition

event
posted on 2023-05-25, 11:49 authored by Peta CookPeta Cook
The images from this exhibition are drawn from my research project titled Reclaiming the self, which examines the experiences of ageing from the perspectives of older people (those aged 65 years and over) living independently in the Greater Launceston community. These photographs, taken by the research participants, address the lack of media imagery produced by older people, and confronts the social veil that has fallen over their lives. This exhibition reveals what contributes towards and is important for the wellbeing of older people, and how they perceive and experience their ageing. This challenges the stereotypes of older age being a time of social withdrawal, and illustrates the dynamism of ageing - the changes, beauty and empowerment that older age can bring.
