Membrane of Memory: Care Instructions Truganini track is a fold in a mountain range, starting at a creek; it traverses a gully emerging at an old Signal Station. Ancient stories are embedded in the land, the geology revealing massive events and changes in climate, interweaved with colonial history and the everyday. On the track is a bounded realm, a canopy of trees and ferns enfolding the body, with the creek trickling by the side, and escarpments and overhangs to be negotiated. The breath of the previous day is often not yet released making a eucalyptus infused vapour cocoon around the track. Fresh animal tracks slide beneath the bushes and birds flutter just out view, detritus of floods are suspended in trees above my head, entangled with cobwebs and fresh leaf falls. I am working to articulate the presence of this track, its participation in this world rather than represent it as though we stand outside of and not really a part of this world. Paper acts as a membrane between events of the past and current events bringing forward possibilities for the future. Washed, ironed and folded I explore my feelings for this land in my cultural language of caring.
