The 2013 Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping (GeoHab) meeting hosted a workshop organized by QPS on "Multibeam Backscatter – State of the Technology, Tools & Techniques". The workshop participants all recognized the need for better coherence and common agreement on acquisition, processing and interpretation of seafloor backscatter data. The GeoHab Backscatter Working Group (BSWG) was created in the wake of this workshop, with the mandate of proposing best practices for the acquisition and processing of backscatter data, and providing recommendations for further development of backscatter acquisition systems and processing software. The group brings together researchers, end-users and manufacturers (of both hardware and software) with knowledge or interest in backscatter related issues. The group is open to all. Its goal is to produce realistic guidelines and provide feedback to hardware and software developers on possible improvement or new implementation of their respective products and equipment. Co-written by specialists of the various fields involved, the guide covers:

 an introduction to backscatter measurements by seafloor-mapping sonar

 a chapter providing a background on the theory of sonar and some fundamental definitions

 a discussion on user needs based on a short survey developed for that purpose

 a review on backscatter measurements by bathymetric echo sounders

 a reflection analysis of backscatter data acquisition best practices

 acquisition best practices

 a thorough review of backscatter processing principles and software

 a synthesis and a number of key recommendations

A first draft of the guidelines and recommendations was presented at the 2014 GeoHab meeting, and the completed version will be released at the 2015 GeoHab conference in Salvador, Brazil before being made public.
