Abstract
The TDO concert series runs annually, attracting and enrolling 80 musicians each year across a minimum of four concerts as part of a series of major concert performances. The TDO fills a unique gap in Australian classical music performance, bringing together highly skilled professionals, amateurs and students into a professional orchestra. Employing Australia's top conductors and tutors, the TDO models current symphony orchestra practice and scheduling, providing a professional concert experience and repertoire that is not commonly available to this level of orchestra in Australia. Every member is enrolled in a series of specifically designed ensemble units through the UTAS Conservatorium of Music, as part of the Bachelor of Musical Arts. Students gain professional level tutoring, conducting and orchestral experience, and receive UTAS recognition for their study and performance.
This is the first of a series of four concerts for 2012. Repertoire is chosen specifically for the developmental skill building ( including instrumental technique, ensemble skill development, professional behaviours) and the development of the whole orchestra across the 12 month period. Each concert forms a critical part of the 'series' and as such the whole constitutes a musical, 'curated exhibition' which is underpinned by a strongly developed pedagogy, with criteria-based and rigorous assessment procedures underpinning each unit and the students progression through the course.
