This overview is an update following the same format as an earlier review by Pacáková and Štulík on capillary electrophoresis of low molecular mass ions which are involved in various biochemical, physiological and environmental pathways. In addition to inorganic species highlighted in the previous issue; special attention has been dedicated to capillary electrophoresis of organic acids, amines and free amino acids as well as recent advances in this area.Due to the large number of publications associated with this topic, only selected key references are cited in the present article. For comprehensive in-depth survey of the research carried out in this area, readers are kindly referred to specials issues of journals such as Electrophoresis and Journal of Chromatography A thoroughly covering this topic.
