First results from a CryoSat-2 calibration experiment in the East Antarctic sea ice zone, SIPEX-2

We encountered difficult sea ice conditions with sea ice thickness exceeding 5 m over large areas, due to highly deformed sea ice floes consisting of many unconsolidated blocks. In addition, snow load on top the sea ice ranged between 0.5 m and 1m in general, with negative sea ice freeboard common in the study area.
