The basic principles and fundamentals of modern ion chromatography are presented with focus on a key separation mechanism, including ion exchange, ion exclusion, chelation, and zwitterionic interactions. The most common types of ion chromatographic columns, eluents, and detection modes are briefly discussed, together with possible applications of ion chromatography for the determination of inorganic and organic anions and cations. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
