Evidence-based medicine (EBM) involves using the best available evidence in the medical literature to provide optimal care to patients. This bimonthly four-part series on EBM will provide an overview of EBM, review different study designs used in research and the basics of critical appraisal. The main aim is to assist readers to become more effective at reading the medical literature.
