Grimstone & Savery: Australia's first Novelists
The essay, Grimstone & Savery, accompanies a solo installation created by the author for the Allport Museum and Fine Arts Gallery, Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office, to celebrate the National Year of Reading. It provides an overview and comparison of the intriguing lives of Australia’s first novelists – Mary Grimstone and Henry Savery. Savery’s novel, Quintus Servinton, was published in 1831, and Grimstone’s, Woman’s Love, in 1832. Both author's wrote their novels in Hobart and both also tragically died as a result of committing suicide.
