Abstract
Several authors in this book have identified and discussed rhe diversity of
interpretations of 'security' thus broadening the scope of this volume by
encouraging variously focused interpretations. This chapter focuses upon one
of the more region-specific, practical definitions identified - maritime security
- and examines how investing in safe shipping operations will aid the
prevention of marine pollution arising from maritime accidents. It examines
how changing regional circumstances have challenged the existing legal
framework applying to Antarctic shipping and describes how the Antarctic
and other relevant international regimes have responded.
