Urban transport systems are irrevocably linked to the cultures that produce them. In pre-industrial times urban passenger transport was limited to animal powered conveyances. Cities were small compact and crowded and people tended to work where they lived. Vehicles were slow and streets congested and unsealed. The industrial age ushered in the era of mass public transport.
