Abstract
The 2004 SHPA Standards of practice for clinical
pharmacy list the ten activities pharmacists undertake to
provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to
hospital inpatients.1 The Standards also document the
staffing required to deliver a clinical pharmacy service
during normal business hours based on bed type. As the
unit of ‘one bed’ is easily understood and identified by
hospital managers, the number of beds, rather than the
number of patients, has been used as a workload measure
for pharmacy services in Australian hospitals.
