Management of hypertension
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) was responsible for 35% of deaths in Australia in 2005 and prevention is a national health priority.' Hypertension is a major risk factor in the development of CVD and poses a significant public health problem. The risk of developing hypertension over a lifetime exceeds 90%, and data suggests that untreated hypertension shortens life expectancy by approximately five years.
