Free Vibrations of Cylindrical Containers

journal contribution

The free vibration characteristics of circular cylindrical containers have been determined. Deep as well as shallow containers are included in the present studies. Flügge's exact and simplified differential equations have been used to determine the amount of error involved in the free vibration characteristics of such containers. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors are presented for a few containers and the results are compared with those obtained by other investigators using different methods. The solution requires numerical evaluation of an eighth order complex determinant to find its eigenvalues. It is concluded that Flügge's simplified approach fails to estimate eigenvalues for shallow containers (containers having height to diameter ratio less than 1) and the exact theory must be used to obtain correct results. © 1995 Academic Press.
