Abstract
This paper examines the sequence abstraction known in Pascal as the ‘file’, and shows how sequences of characters (‘strings’ in the SNOBOL sense) may be cleanly fitted into Pascal‐like languages. The specific problems of providing the suggested facilities as an experimental extension to Pascal are examined. Copyright © 1979 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
