The genesis of this journal has been documented by the Institute of Australian Geographers Incorporated (2022), which formed on 25 August 1958 in Adelaide, South Australia. Once better known as Australian Geographical Studies, the journal post-dated the establishment of its parent Institute by two years insofar as a publications committee was created in 1961; the first volume, in two issues, was published in 1963 under the editorship of Tom Perry. And the rest is not, as they say, simply history—but geography: 60 volumes of rich, diverse, and important scholarly works. Underneath those volumes, like a substrate, are the fundamental— but shifting—concerns of the discipline. Overhead, like a jet stream, are the headwinds of constant change: to higher education globally and nationally; to the discipline around the world and across our shores; to geographers and their increasingly varied ways of being, knowing, and doing.
