Abstract
Despite his prominence as an organist and composer in the early nineteenth century, Thomas Attwood (1765-1838), is little known today. His connections with the Royal household from boyhood resulted in the opportunity to study in Europe with Mozart. Influence of Mozart and the European galant style is prominent in Attwood's sacred works, particularly Come Holy Ghost. His idiom of solemn lyricism was highly influential, shaping the development of the Anglican anthem through the nineteenth century, Come Holy Ghost was originally composed by Attwood for Whitsuntide 1831 and performed as a solo. On Whitsuntide 5 June 2022, a performance recreating this original format was given at All Saint's Church, Hobart by Anne-Marie Forbes (mezzo soprano) and Anne Morgan (organ tuned to 4i5Hz). An edition was prepared for this performance by Anne-Marie Forbes relying on the earliest available source of the work which differs noticeably from later commercial editions. An editorial preface contextualises the work, which is presented representing the composer's intentions for text underlay, phrasing, dynamics and registration, and is given in both the original key and a tone lower to facilitate wider performance.
