Abstract
Sharks, including their close relatives
the rays, are facing a global extinction
crisis — too many are being caught in
fisheries and they are disappearing from
our oceans at alarming rates. In 2021, in
the pages of this very journal, the extent
of this crisis was laid bare: 391 of 1,199
assessed species (>95% of all known
species) are threatened with extinction,
and three species are possibly already
extinct.
