Abstract
The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is a key component of Australia's National Medicines Policy (NMP), the aims of which are to achieve 'optimal health outcomes and economic objectives'.
While the scheme generally achieves these aims, the PBS status of some well-established medicines currently prevents subsidised access to clinically and cost-effective treatments, conflicting with the aims of the NMP.
