Abstract

Marxan is one of the popular tools to design marine protected area (MPA), commonly used by the get it is not able to answer where the priority areas for conferration in related to the characteristic of dispersal larvae and the optimum size of the core zone (no- take zone). Sawai Bay MPA case study integrated marxan with two new tools, MPA Placement Optimization Processing tool and MPA size optimization tool. These tools accommodate the objection of MPA development by identifying larvae connectivity dispersal characteristic and optimum size of no-take zone which could beneficial to fisheries. Sawai Bay is an important area in Maluku Province which is prioritized to be an MPA due to its larvae retention characteristic crucial for marine biodiversity conservation. This proposal is in line with local governmentís plan which has allocated this area for marine conservation. The proposal for Sawai Bay MPA boundaries is detailed with five no-take zones (reserve) recommendation with size of 3- 4 km, acquired through consideration of the home ranges of 138 fish species encountered in Teluk Sawai area.
