This article presents the information pertaining to the development of a propulsion system for a Formula SAE electric vehicle developed specifically for the Australasian Formula SAE competition. The present study covers a review and implementation of a design methodology of a powertrain system, calculations, and derivation of system parameters; decision-making procedure relevant to selecting different powertrain components and the design of a custom transmission for optimisation of powertrain performance. Moreover, the performance of the proposed powertrain is evaluated by simulation analysis using Optimum G simulation environment. The result validates that the proposed propulsion system is capable of achieving the desired performance of the vehicle in accordance with the Formula SAE-A rules and predicted track specifications.
