Abstract

Amateur collector, Ernest Westlake, shipped around 13,000 stone tools he had gathered across Tasmania back to England in 1910. He had spent 18 months travelling around Tasmania by boat and bicycle with a tent.

On his journey he spoke to many Tasmanians white and black and the stories he wrote down in his field diaries are a wonderful source of cultural history.

Historian and author Rebe Taylor believes the value of the stories has been underestimated for too long.
