This paper reports findings of a 2018 study on school leaders and teachers’ perceptions about languages education in Tasmanian primary and secondary schools (P-K12). The study looked at five themes: the reasons for selecting current languages; the factors impacting the offer of languages programs; teaching approaches and materials (using Japanese as an exemplar); the implementation, assessing and reporting against the Australia Curriculum: Languages; and the challenges and the availability of support. These findings are crucial for multiple stakeholders to understand more about the nature of languages education in Tasmania, and to work together to enhance its status in schools.
