Abstract
I believe that student outcomes – evident in their flourishing spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually – are powerfully shaped by the kinds of learning environments we create, and through the interactions they experience in the spaces and processes we call "school". Sometimes the literal walls and ceiling of the classroom become metaphorical walls (restricting a person’s access to authentic experiences for learning) and metaphorical ceilings (limiting a person’s achievement to the things that are emphasised in an academic, pen-and-paper approach to schooling). If I could do one thing to change student outcomes, it would be to remove the barriers between the classroom and the community. I dream of a future where the school classroom becomes a base rather than a bubble.
