Reflections on the value of books
It may sound glib to declare my abiding affection for books, but it is there. I feel fortunate to have grown up in a home where Winnie‐ther‐Pooh1 sat alongside the Bhagavad Gita, Shakespeare, multiple atlases, Agatha Christie, Albert Camus, the Britannica, or Susan Sontag. I have gained enormous satisfaction prowling libraries for targeted items and serendipitous finds, and could spend (and indeed have spent) endless hours in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library, the Mortlock Library of South Australia, or the British Library, among others.
