Abstract
The Premier's trade mission secured two visits into Hobart by
a Chinese icebreaker. It follows a reorganisation of China's
adminstration of Antarctic activities earlier this year. Senior Lecturer in
Chinese Studies at the University of Tasmania, Mark Harrison, says
China's polar activities have moved into a new ministry of natural
resources" I think it's very uncertain as to exactly what china's position is
on Antarctica" The Premier Will Hodgman says concerns by an American
think tank about China's interest in Antarctica are unfounded "I did
receive briefings from national security agencies" The Chinese
icebreaker will visit next summer.
