Through a collaboration of four Australia universities, this two year study examined the extent of health informatics syllabus in the curriculum of all tertiary clinical degrees in Australia. Findings from a national survey with Deans, Heads of School and Course Coordinators of all health discipline courses and results of focus groups held in four different states with the same study population indicate that whilst it is believed health informatics knowledge and skills are deemed an important competency for all clinical health graduates, the extent of this syllabus in Australian courses is very low.. This presentation will discuss in greater detail the findings of the surveys and focus groups. Also to be discussed are findings from an examination of professional accreditation and course competency requirements of all associated professional bodies and the results of an extensive examination of health informatics duties listed on position descriptions for clinical positions. This is the first study of this extent undertaken in Australia and was funded through the Office of Teaching and Learning (formerly the Australian Learning and Teaching Council).
