Abstract
Between 1841 and 1853 New Zealand sent over 100 convicts to Van Diemen's Land. The move was designed to 'cleanse' New Zealand of its convict taint and help sell the colony as a pure land filled with gentlefolk and honest labourers. But the transportation set off an unexpected backlash. Kristyn Harman's new book uncovers an intriguing slice of almost forgotten history.
