Abstract
WHAT is THE ROLE of history in the shaping of Australian identities? How
can historians contribute to the future development of Australian society and
culture? What are the responsibilities of the academic discipline of history and
the wider processes of history-making within the public sphere in the twentyfirst
century? And how might knowledge of Australia's historical legacies influence
and shape our responses to present social and political crises?
