Drawing is found in many forms and has many intents and purposes. But its power lies in its immediacy, when its idiosyncratic forms are embraced to drive experimentation and discovery. When used in this direct way drawing captures and maps the movement of its maker in time and space; a marrying of action and mark, thought and expression. Drawing then, records the experience of its maker and opens a conversation with us, the audience, about the unique relationship the artist has with the world. In turn, this challenges our perceptions and understandings of what we know. This exhibition brings to the fore a ‘performative’ approach to art-making, a choreography of movement where one action or gesture begets another and decisions are made in response to what has gone before. By placing themselves ‘inside’ the act of drawing Hindmarsh, Hogan, Leary, Walch, Woodbury and Yung place themselves in negotiation with reality. They enter into a highly tuned relationship with their drawing as it is formed and unformed in a matrix of ideas and relationships, thoughts and forms. Movement is key to the creative-conceptual process; the artists are shaping patterns of connections with their experience of the world.
