Tasmanian Discovery Orchestra and Discovery Ensembles

performance
posted on 2023-05-25, 13:09 authored by Peter Tanfield
Since 2013 Discovery has delivered five Tasmanian premiere performances and brought seven works to the audience that have received fewer than three performances in Australia. Discovery has also successfully brought together the professional experience and expertise of many TSO players with many young and talented instrumentalists, a galvanising fusion of different energies in every performance - a hall-mark audiences value greatly. Many of the young players have since gone on to full-time positions in orchestras and so many have written to say how their experience with Discovery was deeply significant - “life-changing”, to give one example. The interaction between the space itself, the art-works, the music and the performers is of tremendous significance, so much so that I am now determined to investigate this through more formal research. It has been life-changing for me, such is its power. The two works by Ernest Bloch – Prayer and Abodah – performed on 23. October 2016 were transcribed and arranged by Peter Tanfield for violin and strings. Neither work existed before in that format.
