composition
posted on 2023-05-26, 12:43 authored by Anne-Marie ForbesAnne-Marie Forbes
Rachmaninoff wrote a number of compositions for unaccompanied choir that were based on the liturgies of the Russian Orthodox Church, including a setting of In our Prayers Ever-vigilant Mother of God (1893), the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom (1910). Original program notes were provided for a performance by Allegri Ensemble under the direction of Andrew Bainbridge of Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil composed in 1915. The program is a catalogue of the movements performed providing contextualisation of the work and its performance practice. The performance took place at St David's Cathedral Hobart July 9, 2017 as part of the 2017 Festival of Voices. Around 400 people were in attendance.
