Evidence suggests that a decline in the pasture resource has been occurring for many years, with regional studies across southern Australia including Tasmania in the 1990’s reporting a lack of sown improved pasture species. Numerous factors have been proposed to have contributed to the decline including; soil acidification, salinity, low pasture renovation rates, reduced fertiliser applications, and overgrazing amongst others. Tasmania has recently endured drought in the 2000’s, imposing further strains of overgrazing and moisture stresses on the depleted resource.
