Abstract

WINTER floods and summer bushfires are testing the reliability of a key mechanism in disaster recovery house and contents insurance.

Up to 80 per cent of Australian households may be underinsured in this regard.

Most homeowners have house and contents insurance, but post-disaster estimates suggest a startling gap between coverage levels and rebuild and replacement costs.
