Abstract
This project brings the forgotten yet charming sonata into a contemporary context, while preserving the Baroque aesthetic of improvised embellishment and spontaneity. This aesthetic can only be recreated in a live performance context, resulting in an entirely new realisation of the work 300 years after its inception. Improvisation and embellishment in the baroque era was governed by specific customs and skills. While still pertinent, an attempt to replicate the details of past performance risks destroying the Baroque aesthetic of spontaneity and experimentation.
As there is no record of Locatelli’s own realisation of the score, there can be no authentic edition. The performance on February 27, 2015 included improvised embellishment within a contemporary paradigm, re-establishing the baroque performance tradition in a contemporary context.
